ABCC supports culturally diverse construction and building workforce

Last year the office of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner (ABCC) released its Industry Update (13 December, 2011), detailing its strategy for 2012.

Its aims included a focus on 'wage justice' and a new strategy targeting exploitation of workers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

With that in mind, representatives of the ABCC will visit Melbourne, Perth and Sydney to interview CALD workers throughout April - continuing its goal to gain more knowledge about issues surrounding CALD workers and their employers.

Commissioner Leigh Johns explained: "The ABCC is responsible for ensuring building work is fair and productive in Australia and it is a priority of the Agency to ensure people from CALD backgrounds are aware of their rights and responsibilities."

Mr Johns said the consultations will assist the ABCC with the creation of tools and resources to help CALD workers and employers better understand their rights within the industry.

Perth interviews will take place on April 16 at 45 Plaistowe Mews in the city's west, Melbourne consultations on April 19 at the Multicultural Hub, 506 Elizabeth Street, and Sydneysiders can go to the Park Royal Parramatta on April 23.
