There has been a flurry of activity in certain parts of Australia as more energy companies bring new liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants online, and this is creating a surge in construction projects.

Along with it there has been much higher competition among skilled workers for jobs related to this construction. Australia is expected to see some of the highest amount of competition for skilled trade jobs in the near future, according to experts at IHS Global Insight.

This is a shift from previous trends, however. For years economists have been worrying about a potentially serious skills gap that could make it harder for businesses to find workers with the right experience or credentials.

One of the best examples is the demand for welding and welding services. Skilled workers with experience in welding have seen their job prospects soar in recent years, mostly because their skills are so applicable.

Strong welders can perform inspections, educate the workforce, find a career in engineering or project management or any number of other sectors.
