Get creative with additions to your deck

We're still right in the thick of summer, so a lot of you are likely spending large amounts of time on the deck. Next time you're passing those long summer evenings outdoors, take a look at your space - is there any way in which you could make better use of it?

Let's face it, having a deck in Australia is so commonplace that it's not usually a cause for surprise or celebration, unless you're hosting your first outdoor party or something similar. If your deck is feeling a little stale, perhaps it's time to think about ways to make it a more enticing space.

Perk it up with a pergola

As mentioned, summer is prime deck season in Australia. With that in mind, it always pays to be conscientious when out in the sunshine, and spending time on your deck is no exception. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with over 1 million patient consultations every year according to Cancer Council Australia.

Making your deck a safer place to be can also mean improving its visual appeal. For a tasteful, attractive option, consider erecting a pergola over some of your space. Either install some shading materials across the top, or even some creeping plants for a more exotic option.

At Kennards Hire, we have everything you need to put up a new pergola, from cutting the materials to fastening it all together.

    Build in your BBQ

While there's nothing wrong with the classic Aussie gas BBQ, for extra impact why not build your own wood-fired oven into your deck? Your entertaining space will gain that little bit of extra flair with a brick BBQ, but you could even include something more elaborate, such as an outside pizza oven.

When it comes to outdoor cooking options, you're only limited by your imagination. If you need a brick saw to get yourself started, drop in to Kennards Hire.

    Increase your luxury

For the ultimate in deck decadence, you might want to look at installing a spa pool. Australians love pools, with around 12 per cent of the population having access to one at home according to Roy Morgan. If your deck has the structural strength to hold it - HouseLogic recommends building onto a concrete pad - then you can become the envy of your friends and neighbours with this luxurious addition.

Kennards Hire has all the equipment you need to rejuvenate your tired old deck, no matter the scale of your restoration.
