Builders and contractors in South Australia may soon be affected by the government's decision to commit to achieving a Green Star rating for Tonsley and Bowden redevelopments.

This decision marks South Australia as the first state to seek this rating, which will see residential building developments in these areas aim for a five star rating - or higher - in over 2,400 dwellings in Bowden alone.

In Tonsley, homes for 1,500 residents and a manufacturing centre are also on the agenda for construction.

Best practice benchmarks will be used, measuring Tonsley and Bowden against standards for livability, prosperity, environmental sustainability, design excellence, governance and innovation.

"We are excited to be working together to realise the vision for communities that meet world-leading social, economic and environmental benchmarks," said chief executive of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), Romilly Madew.

The importance of Green Star certified buildings cannot be underestimated, as they have been proven to produce 62 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions and use 66 per cent less electricity than average buildings.

A recent study from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) found that 428 Green Star buildings managed to reduce electricity consumption by the equivalent of 76,000 average households' annual total.
