Painting a wall can be a great way to update a tired-looking interior - and if you are in the mood for some DIY painting there are a range of creative projects you can undertake to make statements with formerly blank spaces!

Decorative ideas are only restricted by your imagination, so let your thoughts run wild - letters, numbers and other patterns can add a personal touch, as well as pictures, drawings and photographs.

Incorporating the above into a successful wall motif can be as easy as getting the right stencils and combining your embellishments in a cohesive way.

Less can often be more, but not always, so consider what kind of statement you want to make and how it will be perceived by visitors and the people you share your home with.

Turning a blank wall in a common area into one that reflects the personalities of all who reside in the house can be a good way to add a feeling of camaraderie - and it can work just as well for family homes as those shared by a group.

Using plaster casts of hands or feet and attaching them to the living room wall, then adding colour to emphasise the placement, can be a real eye-catcher - and a conversation-starter to boot!
