Concrete is one of those materials that you can't work with unless you have the right tools for the job. Not only do you need to get the water and cement ratio just right, but laying the material can be tricky if you're not quite sure what you're doing.

This is why we recommend you hire equipment that will help make the job that little bit easier. From mixing it to the right consistency to sanding down the finished product, we've got all the products you need to make your project a success.

Get off on the right foot with a concrete mixer

The first step is to mix your concrete. While some people might choose to create their own contraptions for making this happen, there's quite simply no substitute for having a reliable concrete mixer to hand.

If you're laying a path or driveway, Cement Australia recommends that you use one part cement with two parts sand and three parts aggregate. This should make sure you have the right consistency and give the best possible chance of your finished project being just as you'd hoped.

The group also recommends using a range of protective equipment to make sure you're using the concrete mixer safely. This includes:

    • Goggles
    • Face mask
    • Gloves
    • Safety boots
    • Long-sleeved clothing

Laying concrete can create high levels of dust and potentially harmful fragments, so it's always best to err on the side of caution and protect yourself and those around you.

    Create the best possible finish

Once you've laid your concrete, the next challenge is to make sure it's as level as possible. While the concrete is still wet, use a manual concrete screed to finish off the surface. It's a lightweight and easy-to-use hand tool that will even off the concrete and prepare it for whatever you might be putting on top.

Sweepers and scrubbers are the ideal option for eliminating everyday grime.

If the surface has already started to solidify, you might find it's necessary to use a concrete grinder to achieve the desired finish. You have two options to choose from, either an electric-powered hand tool or double-headed petrol machine.

Each type of concrete grinder has its merits, so make sure you discuss your options to find out which will be best suited to your project. With the right tools for the job, there's no reason why your project can't look as good as if a professional had tackled it.

Keep your concrete in the best possible condition

After a few months, it's entirely possible you'll need to engage in a spot of concrete cleaning. No matter how well you've laid your concrete, it will soon start to be subjected to everyday wear and tear, not to mention weather conditions.

We have a range of concrete care products that will make the job that little bit simpler, meaning you can go back to marvelling at your handiwork. Sweepers and scrubbers are the ideal option for eliminating everyday grime, leaving your concrete looking as sparkling as the day you laid it.

If your concrete has a pattern in it, you might need to use something less intensive to clean it. Intricate grooves and detail can easily be worn away if you go at your concrete cleaning with too much gusto, so make sure you choose the right machinery to maintain its tip top condition.

Polishing concrete is another option, especially if it's inside your home. This can help buff the surface and give it a much shinier finish - it will once again be the envy of all your visitors!
