Out with old, in with the new: removing wallpaper

If you're embarking on a kitchen or bathroom DIY project - or any other room for that matter - why not consider wallpaper as an alternative to painting a room?

Available in thousands of different varieties and designs, wallpaper can also work out cheaper than painting.

Removing existing wallpaper can be an arduous task, but with a bit of know-how you can be ready to hang your new paper in no time!

If the existing wallpaper is a vinyl variety - older types tend to be made of this - then this should be relatively easy to remove with a stripping knife.

Other wallpapers, however, may not be as easy to remove. Start with a bucket of hot soapy water and sponge the paper for at least ten minutes to loosen it from the wall. If this doesn't work, there are paper-stripping liquids especially designed for this task.

Wallpaper can be stubborn, so for a much easier and effective method you may want to use a wallpaper steamer available from your local Kennards Hire.

Before beginning work with the steamer you will want to go over the wall with a wallpaper perforator - this puts tiny little holes in the material to help the process.
