Outdoor workers should take heat precautions

Any Victorian workers - including tradies - who work outside have been advised to take measures to prepare for hot weather this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology anticipates that today (January 17) temperatures will soar to 35 degrees.

According to Victoria health minister David Davis, the first month of the year is the time when residents are most likely to experience extreme temperatures.

Staying healthy in the heat, Davis said, is easy with a bit of preparation and practical advice.

"As has been well documented in the past, heat-related illness can affect anybody and a range of actions should be taken to minimise the potential harm extreme heat can cause," he explained.

Davis advised that anyone who must be outside during the hottest parts of the day should ensure they have plenty of water with them and stay hydrated.

Staying in the shade and ensuring you are covered up - ideally with a broad-brimmed hat, loose-fitting clothing and sunscreen - can also be effective ways to stay safe.

And when lunchtime rolls around, eating cold meals can help you keep cool on a hot day.
