    Quarry repairs coming to NSW

Known as "the largest volcanic diatreme in the Sydney area", the Hornsby Quarry is slowly undergoing rehabilitation to turn it into a fantastic open area for nearby residents to use. It includes native blue gum forest, which is ecologically endangered, and provides a breathtaking backdrop for anyone visiting the area.

And according to a new media release from Minister for Infrastructure Warren Truss, the NorthConnex project could provide a helping hand in the redevelopment of the site.

"NorthConnex will bring wide-ranging benefits to residents and motorists through productivity improvements and jobs, but now it will also fix the long-standing Hornsby quarry issue," he noted.

Federal Member for Berowra Phillip Ruddock also spoke on the move, noting that 2 million cubic metres of soil from the NorthConnex works could be used to fill in the hole at the quarry - a move that would require more than its fair share of diggers and excavation equipment.

"Once filled, the site will be safer. It also has the potential to be repurposed into a more suitable use for the community, such as a recreational area," Mr Ruddock added.

Hornsby Shire Council paid $25 million for this site in 2002, purchasing it from CSR Limited when it was no longer profitable. However, council was able to recoup $9 million of this, and has committed to the rehabilitation of the land for the betterment of the community.

Construction of NorthConnex is expected to finish in 2019, indicating a rough timeframe within which the quarry could be filled. This task will require large amounts of earth-moving equipment, which is an area in which Kennards Hire excels. Measuring and testing equipment can be vital in the early stages of these projects.
