If you are keen to embrace your green thumb during the sunny days of summer, there is no reason to let a small outdoor space stop your DIY garden dreams.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Green Roofs Australia president Sidonie Carpenter explained that vertical gardens have become increasingly appealing to people living in high-density areas, including inner-city apartments.

She said: "People want to be in touch with something living and vertical gardens have become very fashionable."

If you are thinking about creating your own vertical garden or green space on your apartment balcony, you'll want to begin by thinking about your space.

For example, is your balcony in sunlight for much of the day, or is it shady? This will affect the type of plants you choose.

If you are new to gardening, you might want to start small with a collection of kitchen herbs.

These are easy to grow and have the added benefits of fragrance and practicality - you can add fresh basil, rosemary and sage to a variety of dishes and quite literally enjoy the fruits of your labour.
