Spring garden jobs: Part 3 - How to install shelves in your shed

Spring is just around the corner, and for keen gardeners this season means plenty of time spent outdoors, planting new flowers and sprucing up the backyard.

If you plan to embark on a garden DIY project to build your own garden shed, you might want to think about building some shelves to place all your handy gardening tools on.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a green thumb, you are bound to have a handful of equipment integral to your outdoor work.

Therefore, building some shelves will give each tool its own home, and most importantly separate them from household equipment to make locating things much easier.

The first thing to do for your project is to measure the space where your shelves will sit so that you can buy the appropriate wood. 

It is a good idea to consider how deep you want your shelves - if you want more space, you will need to keep this in mind when purchasing your materials.

For stand-alone shelving you will need to include supports - as a rule the thicker the plywood you use and the lighter the tools that you intend on storing on the shelves, the fewer supports will be needed.

Once you have installed your supports, you can place your plywood shelf on - nailing or screwing it down through the plywood through to the horizontal supports. Finish off with a coat of paint!
