From Melbourne Cup to New Year’s Eve, we know most people love to party! But even seasoned party-planners can suffer high blood pressure at the thought of people descending on their home to celebrate! Especially after long periods

With a bit of planning, your outdoor area can become a well-functioning party space with minimal stress. You’ll be ready for family Christmas dinners, birthdays, weddings and even post COVID lockdown reunion gatherings.

    Here's how.

    Preparing your outdoor space

Give yourself plenty of time to get your outdoor area ready before your event. Mow lawns, pull weeds, trim trees then add decorative touches of potted colour or garden lights. Clean concrete and brick areas with a high pressure cleaner.

Choose a flat area for dining and dancing. It’s hard to relax when your meal is sliding off the table and onto your lap. Or your efforts to dance the night away are foiled when you twist an ankle on uneven ground! If you do a lot of entertaining and you have a sloping or bumpy yard, why not consider hiring landscaping equipment to level things out?

    Organising the party supplies

You may not have the necessities to host larger events but there’s no need to panic-buy enough tables and chairs to furnish a café!

Hiring good quality entertainment equipment is a convenient and cost-effective option.

    Consider:

    • Tables and chairs – is this a sit down meal or will people stand and mingle? Do you need serving tables?
    • Lighting – effective lighting is essential but remember, you’re not illuminating the MCG, so seek advice on the appropriate equipment.
    • Sound and video systems – it’s hard to belt out your favourite party anthem when music is muffled. Or to cheer when you can’t see your horse in The Race That Stops a Nation. Go for quality systems in the best locations.
    • Power – a generator provides an additional, steady power source to avoid unwelcome interruptions.
    • Weather – don’t let rain, prickly heat or winter chills bring an early end to festivities. Keep guests comfortable with a marquee and heating and cooling equipment.
    • Hygiene – cater for a crowd with portable toilets, wash stations and hand sanitiser stations.

    Deciding what’s on the menu

Catering for large groups can be tricky – you don’t want to serve the drinks warm and pizza cold!

    • Hire equipment such as barbecues with spit or roasting options, urns and portable fridge/freezers. You can prepare ahead then keep food and drinks at the right temperatures.
    • If you prefer to outsource catering, options range from premade deli platters to catered spit roasts, mobile pizza ovens or private chefs.
    • Offer plenty of drinks to keep people hydrated. Serve alcohol responsibly, and offer non-alcoholic drinks and water.
Hosting a great party doesn't have to be stressful! Stop in at your local Kennards Hire branch for advice and all the equipment you need to run a smooth and memorable event.
