How to use a Lawn Corer

    How-To

Lawn corers work by taking a small core of earth out of the ground and dropping it back on to the lawn where it can be raked up and removed later. Through the core that’s been removed, fertiliser, air and water can get deeper into the soil to promote grass growth.

If you have any questions about our equipment or need advice on the best equipment to use, the team at your local Kennards Hire branch will be able to help you.

    Steps

Before you use a lawn corer, you’ll need to prepare your lawn. You don’t want the soil to be too hard, so depending on the time of year, you may need to water your lawn in the week or so before you plan to use the corer. You don’t want the soil to be muddy either, so don't over water. You'll also need to abide by any water restrictions that are in place.

It’s a good idea to mow your lawn before you get started, so you’re not trying to push the corer through long grass.

Preparing your lawn before using the Lawn Corer

Before you get started, make sure you have safety goggles, gloves and hearing protection in place.

Open the fuel valve and if necessary, adjust the choke.

Pull the starter cord to start the machine.

Use the speed control to adjust the speed of the machine.

Lower the back wheels using the rear wheel control handle.

To start moving, hold the handle bars and gently pull up the clutch control. There’s no need to push the machine forward as it’s self-propelled.

When you reach the end of a line, lift the tines up and turn the machine. Leaving them in will churn up your lawn, leaving an unsightly mess.

Handy tip: If the tines aren’t digging in deep enough to your lawn, release the clutch to stop the machine and use the depth control knob to make adjustments. For really tough ground, you may need to do a couple of passes.

    Using the Lawn Corer

Once you’re done, rake the cores off the lawn. To help the cores stay open, you can dress the lawn with sand and rake it into the holes.

Water and fertilise your lawn to drive nutrients and moisture deep into the ground.

Once you’ve followed the steps above you’ll be well on your way to the healthy, green lawn of your dreams!
