Young female rugby players across Auckland have been given a unique opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills and connect with the wider rugby community, thanks to a partnership between Kennards Hire, North Harbour Rugby and the NZ Women's Sports Foundation (NZWSF).
The Head Start at Harbour event in September brought together players from local rugby clubs for a hands-on experience that went beyond the usual training session or match day.
Designed to open doors and showcase opportunities within women's rugby, the event gave participants the chance to learn directly from experienced coaches and sports professionals, explore different aspects of the game and connect with other young players who share their passion for rugby.
From mastering scrum techniques to understanding the importance of player preparation, the day offered plenty of opportunities to learn something new.
Former Black Ferns coach Steven Jackson led a practical scrum coaching session, while Harbour Rugby physiotherapists introduced participants to sports strapping techniques.
The hands-on workshops encouraged players to ask questions, develop practical skills and discover the different roles and expertise that contribute to the sport.
Just as importantly, the event brought together girls from different Auckland rugby clubs, helping them build friendships, share experiences and feel part of a wider sporting community.
For the NZ Women's Sports Foundation, Head Start at Harbour was an opportunity to bring its See It Be It programme to life.
NZWSF Founder Philippa Hayward said the programme is about more than simply watching women's sport.
"For NZWSF, this is exactly what See It Be It is about. It isn't simply bringing girls along to watch women's sport. It's creating an environment where they can get closer to the game, meet the people within it, learn something new and, most importantly, feel that sense of 'I belong here'."
Hayward said shared experiences can have a lasting impact on young female athletes.
"There is also something incredibly powerful about experiencing sport together. For girls especially, a shared experience creates more than a memory. It creates connection, confidence and a sense of belonging."
Feedback from coaches, families and participants reinforced the positive impact of the event, particularly the opportunity for young players to interact directly with coaches, health professionals and rugby development staff.
At Kennards Hire, we're proud to support initiatives that bring communities together and create opportunities for the next generation.
Head Start at Harbour demonstrated what can be achieved when organisations work together with a shared purpose: helping young women and girls develop confidence, discover opportunities and feel they belong in sport.
The event was made possible through the collaboration of Kennards Hire, North Harbour Rugby and the NZ Women's Sports Foundation, together with the coaches, presenters and support teams who contributed their time and expertise.
Because supporting the next generation isn't just about helping them develop their skills today. It's about giving them the confidence to see what's possible tomorrow.
